Who are Urban Jungle Gardens?

Urban Jungle Gardens are James Grainger and Ashley Brent.

Based in the small hamlet of Daccombe in South Devon, we both share a passion for the great outdoors and working with nature and plants.

The idea for Urban Jungle Gardens was developed at one of the best thinking grounds known to man - a local food and beer festival. The rest as they say is history! Since that fateful day, we have sought to build up a gardening service based on reliability and quality and are proud of the work that we do!

James' passion for horticulture stems from an early age when he helped his grandfather cultivate fruit and veg in the Devon village where he still lives.

James spent two years studying horticulture and garden design with the Institute for Horticultural and Rural Studies; culminating in him passing the RHS (level 2) Certificate in Horticulture examinations at the highest level (distinction). During his studies, James spent two months living and working at Trengwainton Garden in Cornwall. This beautiful National Trust garden is famous for it's spring colour, abundance of tree ferns and the recent re-introduction of its Victorian kitchen garden.

After completing his studies, James won a place on the prestigious Certificate in practical Horticulture training programme at RHS Rosemoor. During his time at Rosemoor James participated in a number of horticulture master classes as well as benefiting from working with some of the most knowledgeable and respected gardeners around.

Horticulture is an obsession: When he's not gardening, he'll be reading about it or dreaming up new plant combinations for his next garden design.

Ashley spent his formative years in the Garden of England (Kent), always escaping the towns and heading into the country. With many a weekend spent helping clear and restore local heath land into a wildlife haven, his love of the outdoors and nature were sealed at an early age.

Brought to Devon in 2001 by university, it soon became his adopted home with much time spent up on Dartmoor or out on the water.

For a year now, he has volunteered as a warden with the National Trust at Lydford Gorge in West Devon, renowned for its sessile oak woods, spectacular views and challenging working environment. Learning from the experienced team at Lydford and also attending horticultural and arboricultural courses, his wealth of knowledge and capabilities is constantly expanding.

Ashley is also studying for his RHS (Level 2) Certificate in Horticulture as well as having just passed the first part of his City & Guilds NPTC chainsaw qualifications.

Diligent and conscientious, we take pride in our work and are only truly satisfied when we have completed a job that not only reaches our high standards, but that also pleases you as well.
